Let us start with gender. Not male or female, but grammatical gender: masculine and feminine.
Words in Spanish are either masculine or feminine. Muchacho, for example, is a masculine word.
In Spanish, the definite article has the same gender as the word it precedes. The definite article EL is masculine.
